welcome to montgomery county, north carolina
"...The exact geographical center of North
Carolina is in Montgomery County - a community at the axis of neighborly
generosity and local pride. It's a place unspoiled by over-development,
where as many acres are claimed by lakes as by towns." -
North Carolina Magazine
Bounded by Moore, Richmond, Stanly, Davidson and Randolph counties,
we are 50 minutes from Greensboro and 70 minutes from Charlotte.
The area has very warm summers, mild winters, and spring and fall
are usually perfect. The county seat is Troy - the other four townships
are Biscoe, Candor, Mt. Gilead and Star.
Candor is home to the North Carolina Peach Festival, held on the
third Saturday of each July. The Star Fiddler's Convention is the
state's oldest and is held in late winter. Troy is well known as
the home of Capel, Inc., American's largest manufacturer and importer
of area rugs.
Town Creek Indians settled here about 1500 ad in an area close to
Mt. Gilead. The tribe is estimated to have numbered around 2,000
in population at one time. The Town Creek Indian Mound, a historic
site dedicated to Native American Indian heritage, stands where
one of the villages once existed. There is a visitor center with
interpretive exhibits, audiovisual programs and maps to take a self-guided
tour of the site.
To the west is our greatest natural asset, the 40,000 acres that
that make up most of the Uwharrie National Forest, named for the
Uwharrie Mountains. The mountains are some of the oldest in North
America. The national forest is bounded on the west by the Pee Dee
River and by lakes Badin and Tillery. The rivers and the forest
provide incredible recreational activities for the area, including
camping, hiking, hunting, fishing, water skiing, boating and golf.
